Country church near Shirley in Tyler County, West Virginia.
The shadows of the trees on the snow lead the eye into this scene.
Shadows can be used as a primary
design element in a composition.

Blackwater State
Park Cabin. This isolated cabin, at Blackwater Falls State Park, WV,
is typical of the cabins at Blackwater, popular at any time of year.

Middle
Island Creek, Winter. Snow clinging to the rocks provides a stark contrast
with the dark waters of Middle Island Creek in Tyler County, WV.
Good waterproof boots are an asset in making
good photographs. Some of my best photos have been taken while standing
ankle-deep in water.

Blackwater
Falls in Winter. Blackwater Falls is the best known waterfall in West
Virginia, and one of the most photographed scenes in the state. Located in
the popular Blackwater Falls State Park in Tucker County, WV. This view of
the falls is from the handicapped viewing platform, only a short, level walk
from the parking area.

Backlit
Icicles. These translucent icicles glow with brilliance, backlit by the
late day winter sun. The small cave from which I made this photo felt like
a jail cell, with the icicles acting as the "bars". North Bend State
Park, Ritchie County, WV.
A vertical image of these icicles was published as the cover of the
January 2004 issue of Wonderful West Virginia magazine.

Snow-laden
Forest. Heavy
snow clings to every branch and bow along the crest of Backbone Mountain one
early winter morning following an overnight snowfall. Tucker County, WV.

Seneca Rocks, Split Rail Fence. A
well-known West Virginia landmark, Seneca Rocks rises high above the valley
floor. In addition to being a popular scenic attraction, it is also very
popular with rock climbers. A hiking trail leads to an observation deck
near the rocks, and to the crest of the rocks from behind.

Red
Barn, Canaan Valley. This red barn is located along the North Branch of
the Blackwater River
in Canaan Valley.
Anything you find that is red (like this
barn), when there is a snow on, presents a potential photo opportunity.
